The Latest, Greatest AWB Has Been Proposed

The leftist gun grabbers in the House of Representatives have introduced the latest and greatest incarnation of their recycled, already tried and proven ineffective “assault weapon” ban – HR 5087.

Rather than rehashing everything I already said on Twitter, I’m going the lazy route and just going to plop down the tweets right here.

CA Liberals Kill Yet Another Cop

Yesterday, August 30, 2017, Deputy Bob French, a 21 year veteran cop with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department, was murdered in cold blood by a worthless piece of crap career criminal who should have been behind bars, but instead was loose on the streets thanks to policies put in place by California liberals.

Normally, I refuse to name the criminal in cases like this, but in this instance I must in order to allow doubters to verify what I am going to say.  Thomas Daniel Littlecloud (32 yrs), who from this point on I shall only refer to as “Scumbag,” should have been in prison yesterday, but thanks to AB-109, the California Prison Realignment Act, which was dreamt up, written, passed by CA democrat politicians and signed into law by CA democrat governor Jerry Brown, Scumbag was loose.

Scumbag has felony convictions going back to at least 2004 in Alameda County.

2800.2 VC [F] ; 29800 PC [F] – 9/10/2013

10851 VC [F]; 2800.2 VC [F]; 29800 PC [F]; 11377 HS [F]; 496 PC [F] – 5/15/2013

245 PC [F] x6, 12021 PC x3 [F] – 12/6/2005

10851 VC [F]; 11378 HS [F]; 11370 HS [F]; 12021 PC [F] – 9/3/2005

10851 VC [F], 69 PC [F], 243(c)(1) PC [F]; 11377 HS [F] – 12/31/2004

12020 PC [M] – 9/1/2004

Then, in December of 2015, Scumbag was arrested again, on new charges which included possession of stolen property, possession of loaded guns by a prohibited person, possession of narcotics, resisting arrest, and a number of other felonies.  At the time of that arrest, for all of those fresh felonies, Scumbag was on active “PRCS” parole.  He was still on “PRCS” parole yesterday when he killed Deputy French.  Hell, even the cop hating, uber-liberal Sacramento Bee freely admits he has a lengthy criminal history.

You might be wondering what the hell “PRCS” parole is.  PRCS was created by AB-109, and what they (CA democrats) did was take “non-violent offenders” out of prison, put them on the streets, and instead of assigning them to a parole officer, they mandated the counties provide supervision of these state prisoners.  The counties were allocated funding to do this new task, however the state all but took their ability to violate these parolee’s parole unless they committed a fresh felony, and even then the maximum amount of time they can get is a joke*.  What it boiled down to was the state, at the direction of the liberals who created these laws, saved a bunch of money by just releasing inmates onto the streets.

So, back to Scumbag here, when he was arrested for all of those fresh felonies back in December of 2015, he had his PRCS parole violated.  But here we are, less than 2 years later, and Scumbag is back on the street with loaded stolen guns, dope, stolen cars, and now instead of just fighting and running from the cops, he shot three cops, killing one.

If you are a California voter, and you voted for the democrat politicians who passed these bills, if you voted for Jerry Brown who signed AB-109 into law, if you voted for other bills decriminalizing crimes (Props 47 & 57) and coddling criminals, you bear some responsibility not only in the death of Deputy Bob French, but in the deaths of all the other cops and regular citizens who have been killed by the people you put back on the streets.

Actions have consequences!  Your vote has consequences!

Today, thousands of cops are mourning the loss of a fellow officer and a family is mourning the loss of a father and grandfather, whose death is one of the direct consequences of your votes.

Please, stop killing us!

Now, based on past experience, I know I will be receiving messages and comments from offended California liberals telling me that they “adamantly support law enforcement” and would not do anything to endanger the cops or to lessen public safety.

To that I call BULLSHIT!!!

If you voted for the people who passed these laws, or if you voted for Prop 47 or Prop 57, you did in fact do something that not only endangers yourself and all of California, but has directly lead to the deaths of numerous people, including several cops, the most recent being Deputy Bob French.  You may not have intentionally done so.  You may not have realized that is what you were doing, but sadly, that is exactly what you did.

* This sentence has been edited after an actual PRCS case worker pointed out my error where I said the counties did not get funding.

Frustrating Beyond Belief

Every time there is an officer involved shooting, the keyboard commandos and internet academy police experts come out of the woodwork.  These are the people with no actual experience doing the job, but they are going to tell you exactly how you should have done things.   They will explain how unarmed and single handedly they would have disarmed that suspect in seconds without injuring them.

These folks are not a new phenomenon.  There are memes by the dozen for those folks, and below are a few of them.

However, no matter how much I (we) realize they exist, they still get under my skin.  The problem is not necessarily them, it is that their stupidity infects the soft headed people who don’t know any better.  A person who knows absolutely nothing about a topic has no way to distinguish an actual expert from one of these idiots.

I recently (5 days ago) put together a YouTube video in which I offered my own analysis of the video of the Keith Scott shooting that was filmed by his wife on her cell phone.  That video has gotten a ton of traffic, and the comment section has been very busy, which has unfortunately kept me very busy policing it.

Besides being called all the slurs you can imagine for a cop, called a racist, a Nazi, and even received at least one death threat, I’ve had the pleasure to encounter a large number of the internet police experts.  This person here, “Carry Lifeforme,” takes the prize as the biggest, most annoying moron of them all.

What follows are screenshots capturing the entire conversion thus far.  Please be advised, at some point I’ve given up all semblance of professionalism and the expletives begin to fly.

(last line in the above screenshot is the first line in the next)

Carry here epitomizes the type of person I am talking about.  No actual knowledge, no proof, any evidence is second hand anecdotal hearsay, and they refuse to do anything to learn actual facts on the matter.  Again, my main issue is not with their stupidity, but that their stupidity is contagious.

That said, people like Carry really make me wonder…

From the Mind of a Third Grader

While the Dallas Terrorist attack was being televised live my eight year old daughter became horrified and asked her mother over and over if Daddy was there. My wife tried to explain afterwards about racism, what it meant and why those Officers were being shot at. It was a very difficult discussion and we spoke about it at length everyday. After the President gave his speech at the Dallas Memorial my daughter was left with even more confusion. She wanted to know why the President didn’t like the Police. These are not words I prompted her with but even she saw through the false empathy. My wife suggested she write a letter to the president explaining how she felt.

My daughter edited her letter multiple times and the original told the President that: “He should dislike the bad guys more, the bad guys who do drugs and hurt children.” I thought this was profound but she wanted to erase it because she felt they were truly not her own words but inspired by her parents. She eventually changed the ending of the letter to simply state “Police are good!” This is meaningful not just for me, but for all Law Enforcement out there, our children will listen to what we are teaching them so let us try and teach them the truth whenever possible. If we let the state raise our children the result is chaos.

Obviously I am biased here because I speak of my own child but I could not be more proud. After asking all of the appropriate questions over the last week and coming to her own conclusions she hit the nail on the head with deadly accuracy. Of course the president doesn’t have a great reputation in my household and I won’t ignore the fact that her words are ultimately inspired by my own lessons but isn’t that the point? Aren’t we supposed to foster critical thought in our young?

As a cop I’ve been taught to write at the fourth grade level which is extremely difficult for me yet this is third grade writing in its purest form. It speaks plainly to the message she wants to portray “my Daddy is good” and she is insulted by our leader believing anything otherwise. She feels strongly enough about it to mail this letter to the President and is hopeful for a response. The very idea that I or any of my partners would treat someone differently because of the color of their skin does not fit into her logic. She simply doesn’t believe this is true because she has not seen or heard of it. This is the danger of promoting false narratives.

Perhaps we could all learn from the third grade vantage point and learn to observe what is directly in front of us instead of focusing on the imaginary. We as a people can learn many lessons by simplifying the facts and acting on our own logic, deciding what the “truth” is by seeing this for ourselves. If I were a bigot and a racist she would know about it because it is not something you can hide from your own children. The obvious truth in her mind is vastly different from how the President views the world. What experiences has he had which causes him to believe in a universal falsehood that gives rise to racism in cops where it seldom exists?2

Our politicians need to leave their safe, upper class neighborhoods and mansions and view the world for what it truly is. I encourage President Obama to do a ride along with any lawman in any state and think about the things he witnesses. Any of you who are in doubt should also do this, perhaps some of your  questions would be answered and the world would reveal itself for how it truly exists in this realm, not the illusory world politicians speak of. Learn from the simple logic of a fourth grader and stop confusing the simple truth of the world. Racism is indeed real but where is it most prominent? Experience this issues from a wider vantage point if you can. Contact your local law enforcement agency and ask them about a ride along, you will be enlightened.

Law Enforcement Diplomats

Social media is an interesting armchair style warrior. Lots of opinions and sometimes zero experience or knowledge on a subject. The problem is we Cops don’t always know what someone else might have experienced or what their personal Law Enforcement story is. One reader today regarded this page as a “circle jerk LEO” page which made me remember something. Cops aren’t just Cops anymore we are Diplomats and Ambassadors to society. There is a certain responsibilitiy which goes along with the ideal and is inclusive in the duties of a Law Enforcement Officer.

People who are not cops and have never been cops might never fully understand every facet of our calling. Why become angry with those who are under a differing opinion? Obviously it’s ridiculous to think that Law Enforcement Officers are all racially motivated or on the flip side of the coin that we are all “the right hand of the democratic party’s agenda.” Ignorance can be bliss but I would rather enlighten than insult. All may not be enlightened I realize yet in some occasions it is well worth the extra effort which may benefit the Police Reputation.

1I teach my children to ask questions and not simply obey commands given to them by someone claiming to be a leader. I also teach my children to be respectful in the asking of those questions and most importantly to listen to the answer and make their own determination. When people put forth ridiculous ideas regarding cops we should seek to answer those accusations with logic and truth. We can also do it diplomatically if the misguided person isn’t too hostile. We may not reach all using this method but less will also be turned away.

When working the streets I usually allowed the public to ask any question they wanted, so long as it was safe at the time for me to do so. In one particular incident I had made a felony arrest on a subject with a warrant. Several people came out of the buildings nearby and began yelling at me. I feared they would surround me so while I was mentally prepared to kill all of them if needed, I also politely told them to give me a minute and promised to answer their questions.

I put the bad guy in the back seat of my car and secured him safely while asking for a cover unit. The potential mob was still angry but at a safe distance. Once my cover partner arrived I had him keep an eye on my prisoner and I approached the group with a smile. I asked what questions they had and It turned out these people were relatives of the man in my car, or so they claimed to be. It really didn’t matter, at this point I felt a small obligation to attempt an explanation as to why in their eyes “the government was taking away their friend for no reason.”

It was calmly explained I had a warrant for his arrest, explained the booking process and provided information on how they could contact the jail to schedule a 3visit with the subject. I was then asked about the court process, this time they were much less angry in asking the question. I explained the court process and the likelihood the subject would be in jail until his first hearing which would probably occur on the following Tuesday. I was thanked profusely by most of the group and they returned to their homes. One guy even tried to give me a hug and stated: “now that’s respect.”

Later in the day I had a discussion with my partner who told me it was pointless for me to address the small group. I explained I had only done this when it was safe to do so yet he believed I was wasting my time. It was difficult for me at the time to articulate my reasons for doing so but in short I told him this particular neighborhood might be more cooperative with Law Enforcement in the future if we treated them with a little more respect. I tell this story because I believe it is not a waste of time to explain circumstances which the public may not fully understand. Hell, the whole point of writing here is to hopefully enlighten and educate not just to complain. Otherwise our words only serve to rally those who are supportive and turn away those who may be on the fence.

I started a text conversation with one of my favorite and most trusted beat partners regarding this subject and he summed it up quickly and accurately while heading out the door. In a short text message which took him less than a minute to write he hit the nail on the head and went on to prove my point here. Examine the following text message:

“I think we have a responsibility to speak rationally and logically when we speak for the side of law enforcement. It becomes obvious that we are cops in these discussions, so why portray ourselves as irrational asshats. We both know that law enforcement officers in general are not out there hunting minorities and just trying to f with people, but there are people out there who legitimately think otherwise. We have legitimate arguments which carry serious weight. I think we do us and the real issues a huge disservice when we just yell and down talk people. I think some people start seeing the validity of our points when we calmly explain them.”

Stuck in the middle

rexfeatures_159702_3087840bClowns to the left of me…..

Jokers to the right…….jack-nicholson-joker

I have one side telling me I am a racist horrible person and the other telling me I’m not doing my job. The frustrations mount daily, sometimes in anger and others in apathy.

I found this video essay from CNN yesterday. I committed time to go through the majority of it, there really isn’t too much here that is new, unless you live under a rock. The takeaway? Black Americans are continuing to slaughter each other in Chicago and nobody seems to care.

Chicago crosses 2,000 shooting victims this year

That’s not really a fair statement. People care, all people even the cops. I care or I wouldn’t be spending my free time writing about it. We are tired of the violence, tired of the slaughter on the streets, weary of the finger pointing and the endless rhetoric. NOBODY wants to take responsibility for anything, they simply want to point at others. Yesterday two more police involved shootings captured the nation’s attention, once again the massive violence in the inner-cities goes without comment. These new events have yet to develop fully, but will likely end like all the others. Violence, over reaction and outrage. In the end not much will change. One side will blame the cops, another will blame the culture of violence, someone else will blame poverty while still another will blame the gun. Like most situations there will be Monday morning options, the “could’ve, should’ve and would’ve” crowd will speak large, but it will change nothing.

I committed some time to this collection of video stories, and I saw the same old faces talking about “our lives matter” or “we have to stop killing each other” and of course “we need to fight the racist cops”. Who are some of these faces?

Ice-Cube; militant rapper, hard ass actor and now family movie guy. I appreciate that he seems to want to get a positive message out there but let’s not forget how he got his start…..

God damn, it’s a brand new payback
From the straight gangsta mack in straight gangsta black
How many motherfuckers gotta pay
Went to the shelf and dusted off the AK
Caps gotta get pealed
Cause “The Nigga Ya Love to hate” still can “Kill at Will”

From Ice Cube’s song: “The Wrong Nigga To Fuck With”

Perhaps the next spokesperson is more reasonable….enter Spike Lee- who wants to point out the abhorrent violence in Chicago, while at the same time tweeting messages encouraging people to take justice into their own hands. Spike Lee who called for someone to shoot Charlton Heston with a “.44 Bull Dog” and tweeted out the supposed address of George Zimmerman forcing an uninvolved couple to move due to continued threats of violence.

Both of these men have a powerful voice, I don’t want to imply that what they say doesn’t matter they just can’t have it both ways. You cannot with one breath make money on an image of anger and hate while, with the next, telling everyone it’s not ok. You cannot promote and denounce violence with the same sweep of the hand. If these two have both realized the error in their ways then by all means, speak-up! Repent and let the world know you were wrong. Be a role model, show us a flawed hero who can find his way, that is the voice our kids need.

On the other side we have the politicians, intent on holding onto power in anyway necessary. The Mayor of Chicago calls for an end to the violence while rooting out the “Cancer in the Police Department”. Rahm Emanuel fired his Chief of Police to help keep protestors at bay but has done nothing to stop the violence.

The Big-Wigs in Washington call for stricter gun control……whoa there, hit the brakes. Chicago has some of the most restrictive gun control in the entire nation. Surely the violence cannot possibly be gun related, these people would have to be criminals to have guns in this city.

News-Flash, they are criminals and the cops know who many of them are. The opening video by Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson really sums up the entire problem. “We know who these people are we just need to hold them accountable before they commit new crimes or become victims of crime”——-what a simpleton.

Maybe the cops in Chicago are not racist so much as they are just frustrated. Cops in every city and county are stuck in the middle. They are criticized for inaction and overreaction simultaneously. They know who the bad guys are and they can’t keep them locked up. Even the angry priest with Spike Lee says he hates the prison system but we can’t let these guys just walk around.

When I see the “folk heroes” like Spike Lee, Ice Cube, Snoop Dog and the other malcontents plead for peace while at the same time making millions of dollars from perpetuating a life of crime and mayhem, I am disgusted. You cannot have it both ways. Stop selling the lie, stop encouraging future “urban heroes” to carry the flame. Making martyrs out of criminals who died committing crimes will do nothing to encourage the next generation. Paying homage to a life of crime, materialism and discontent will not give us the next great hero. It will certainly provide us with lasting headlines.

To the law makers, you will never legislate away violence and criminal behavior. Chicago should know better than most cities given their storied history. Even if Chicago went into a full Marshall Law lock-down they would not end the violence. Not, until they are willing to hold people accountable and change the culture. You cannot preach acceptance and exclusiveness at the same time. I do not accept this is a race issue so much as it is a culture issue. We need real role models, not criminals immortalized in roadside tributes made up of dollar store candles.635901576400440002590111655_imgres

Nazis, Liberals and hate Oh, my……

The more I read about this event in Sacramento yesterday, the more disturbing I find it. For anyone who missed the first post, a quick re-cap. On Sunday (6/26/16) a group of basically Neo-Nazis had a planned rally in front of the California State Capitol. The event was properly scheduled and the group had obtained the necessary permits to hold their event. Offended at the idea of a White Supremacist rally, a left leaning group planned a counter protest. Short of a bunch of yelling and screaming this really should be the end of the story, but it is just the beginning.

As the rally began the liberals of the counter protest began throwing rocks, chunks of concrete and swinging sticks injuring the Skin Heads and Neo Nazis who were holding a sanctioned event. Several people were injured, many were beaten and even stabbed. There were several Sacramento news stations there to cover the event and they were also attacked in the name of free speech……well free speech depending on what view you hold. One of the reporters (as shown at the end of the KCRA video) is assaulted by the leftist protesters because they don’t want a record of their actions. (protest at state capitol turns violent)

According to the articles I have read there have been no arrests made as a result of the incident.Cl5bJW5UsAAXF5X.jpg-large

Now I find myself in a very unsettling position, defending people for whom I have zero respect. To quote (sort of) Jake Ellwood, “I hate Sacramento Nazi’s”. However, even vile disgusting groups like Skin Heads and Nazis have the same first amendment rights as Black Lives Matter (BLM), Gay Pride, Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and La Raza. Contrary to the narrative not all Americans agree with what these groups have to say either. Like it or not everyone has an EQUAL right to free speech. Once we allow a selection of what is ok as free speech then it ceases to be FREE.

The spokes-hole for this group in Sacramento is a female who claims victory for her side because it is right, she says her group will use force to stop hate….umm what? She represents a group identified as BAM- By Any Means Necessary. I bet you would have a hard time counting all the coexist stickers on their cars. It was these “Pro-choice”, “Pro-gay”, “Pro-open border” “anti-gun” activists who perpetuated violence to stop free speech. I find myself wondering which side I dislike more at this point.
Fortunately, the media was there to set the record straight, a quick glance at the headlines should show us what happened:

Anti-fascist counter-protestors parade through Sacramento after multiple people were stabbed during a clash between neo-Nazis holding a permitted rally and counter-protestors on Sunday at the state capitol in Sacramento, California, United States, June 26, 2016. REUTERS/Max Whittaker

Wait, why do all these headlines sound different than what was reported? None of these headlines reflect the facts. They all sound like the hate mongering Nazi’s attacked peaceful protestors in an angry rage. Watch the news videos, read the local reports of what happened. The left leaning “My way or the highway” crowd, threw chunks of concrete, they damaged the state capitol building and injured people. I have no doubt the Nazi crowd, once provoked, fought back, but none of this changes the fact that the villainous White Supremacist hate filled Nazi’s were actually the victims.

EQUAL means EQUAL you spoiled little morons. This is the result of failed leadership, plain and simple. For the past 8 years, Americans have been divided, labeled and pitted against

1402483_1280x720one another all in the name of collecting votes. From welfare to immigration there has been a shameless segregation of Americans in order to continue one party rule.

California is the king of one party rule. You need look no further than this dysfunctional liberal pit of cronyism to see what does not work. The infrastructure of the California is disintegrating at an alarming rate. They built a brand new bridge in the San Francisco Bay Area, it is already in danger. It ran BILLIONS over budget and it is leaking and rusting in places where is shouldn’t. who is responsible? I have no idea because everyone is pointing fingers at someone else.

There is a new money suck of a project called the “High Speed Rail”. The idea is a bullet train to connect Northern and Southern California. The voters asked for it 2008 and to date nothing has been built but they have spent over $600 million of a projected $68 Billion…. meanwhile roads deteriorate and the homeless fill the streets. Proposition 47 has been covered many times on this page so I won’t go into that.np05v

Slogans of acceptance litter the freeways on larger than life billboards. “Build Schools not Prisons”, “Health Happens when we Dream Together”, “Hugs not Hate”….well unless you are on the wrong side of an opinion then it is a brick to the skull for you.

How have we come to this? When did peace and love become “coexist or I will bash your fucking head in”? We are a broken society and we need to fix ourselves. We can no longer afford to stand by while politicians divide and conquer by turning us against each other. We cannot allow angry children to distort the constitution because they are uncomfortable with true equality. We cannot give our freedoms up one at a time because we are afraid.

NCIS, I’m Done With You!

I don’t watch much adult TV, maybe 5-6 shows a week.  With three kids in the house, and a wife, the TV is usually occupied with kids shows or wife shows, but we do record a few shows which the wife and I watch together regularly.  Up until last night, one of those shows was NCIS.  My wife and I have been watching this show consistently for about 10 years now.  I liked the characters, I enjoyed the stories, even though the cop work done in the show has always been a ridiculous stretch, but it is a TV show and I know to expect that from TV.

However, as of late, they have been pissing me off on a fairly regular basis.  Seems every episode lately features one or more of the following:  1) inept local law enforcement, 2) guns being evil and easily available or 3) dirty local law enforcement.  It is so blatant that it is not just me picking up on it, but my wife has even groaned several times when the subject came up in the show.

The most recent episode, S13.E22 Homefront, the one we watched last night, that was the straw that broke the camel’s back.  Not only was the episode’s main bad guy another local uniformed cop, but the episode featured a cameo appearance by none other than the cop hater in chief’s wife, Michelle Obama.

Look, I get it, you’ve been on the air for 13 seasons.  It gets hard coming up with new stories for every episode.  Honestly, I don’t know how the writers do it.  I even get jumping on the gun control bandwagon.  Hell, you are Hollywood.  Pushing lefty causes is what you do.  BUT when you consistently bash local law enforcement, and then bring the most divisive, cop hating president’s wife on the show, you’ve gone to far.

NCIS, I’m done with you!  I will never watch another episode, and I encourage everyone who supports law enforcement to do the same.

Death of the White Knight Cop

I grew up in an era, and maybe the place, where the neighborhood police officer was revered by many, and feared by the rest. To me, as a prankster of a young man who teetered on lawless, the lawman commanded respect.

Nothing I had ever done was really bad, especially by today’s standards, but I had soaked up my share of beer while in high school, and even TP’ed a few houses. Okay, more than a few.

It really wasn’t a big leap for me to go from my military service, which began because I was simply a rebellious post high school kid who wanted an easy way to get out from Mom and Dad’s house, to someone who learned discipline during a 4 year stint in an elite military unit, and then joined civilian law enforcement after.

Fast forward nearly 30 years and so much has changed. The revered or feared local cop has been replaced by a person who is less prepared but more challenged than ever, fighting for the very soul of your neighborhood, your community, your nation.

You made him this way. You made him who he is now as opposed to who he was before. The revolving door justice system, where prisoners give up no comfort whatsoever and then are quickly released, creates no fear of consequence. The liberal education system creates the beta-cop who enters with diminished standards of performance simply because of his or her ethnic identity, who frequently cannot fight the hardened criminal element, cannot shoot, cannot test, but still is shuttled into positions out of society’s sense of fairness.

Still, in spite of this, there are battle-ready police who make it onto the force. The percentages are lower, but they still exist. The real question is, what is in their minds?

What would you think if your president, in the earliest days of his tenure, referred to police who were called to a scene, and simply tried to identify someone who was actually breaking into his own house, to insure he was the homeowner, as stupid? And has never let up with the anti-police rhetoric since?

What would you think if you worked at a Department where your local politicians routinely accused your entire profession of misconduct and systematic racism, even while statistics clearly showed you were being attacked far more frequently from those the politicians defend? Which you already knew, because you had been living those attacks? And then, when someone believe those politicians, shot and killed two of your friends, your coworkers, honorable men?

What would you think if appointed politicians – read: Police Chiefs, Commissioners – were placed in charge of you, and then formed “associations” that were routinely quoted by the media as indicative of your voice, in speaking blatant and dangerous falsehoods on behalf of their liberal political masters?

What would you think if your police captain, despite two officers being shot, clocked out and went home? What would you think if your police commanders who acted that disconnected were shuttled into their positions because of their ethnicity and someone’s idea of fairness?

These things aren’t so unusual in the police world. In fact, when these things hit the news, around the entire nation officers say “Yeah, that’s not surprising.”

So fast forward to Beyonce and her shenanigans in the Super Bowl, glorification of a movement that calls for the death of police nationwide, and her video that seems to perpetuate YET ANOTHER lie about police. Beyonce goes on tour and there seems to be at least some resistance to providing security for her concerts. I know *I* will not voluntarily do it. And many officers I know have said the same thing.

A few officers are breaking out the rhetoric, the King Arthur “I will do what I have to do to protect my citizens and uphold the law” White Knight slogans, and I’m sure those few actually do believe it. But they’re misguided about me, and why I am who I am.

Here’s the real truth.

I am not a puppet.

I have honor, but it’s not honor for me to suffer for the amusement of the criminal element, and it’s not honor for me to be sacrificed on the altar of politics. I am a person who serves people who wish me to serve them. I can’t be anything more than that, and neither can the few remaining White Knight cops; they just don’t know it yet.

I listen to Hillary and Bernie talk all manner of trash about us still, perpetuating lies and acting like tiny percentages of our profession are indicative of vast corruption, and simply isn’t the truth of what is happening in our communities. I’m afraid things won’t get better.

Whether the cop serves you, or not, is up to you.

A Split Second……

Harry_CallahanThat’s the amount of time you get to make a life or death decision, a split second. How long is that really? Turn your head, look left and then look forward that’s about 1 second. Traveling in a car at 50 mph you have just traveled about 75 feet. A trained police officer can fire at least 5 rounds in that same 1 second; it’s actually a lot of time.  In a stressful event we have all heard that “time stands still” making that 1 second seem like an eternity. So how fast can an encounter with an armed subject go from bad to worse? A lot faster than than one second.

The current use of body cameras has allowed all of us to be the Monday morning quarterbacks of officer involved shootings. We get to watch after the fact from the comfort of our living rooms and judge the tactics and encounters we witnessed. How did the officer do? Did he compare to our favorite TV cops, or did our inner CSI show the flaws in what happened.

I’ve watched a bunch of these videos and even the best of them still leave out as  much as they show. The Lego_CSI_by_niskoristi angles are wrong, the clarity is lacking or the resolution is    grainy. Earlier I posted a link to one of the better videos I have  seen; it struck me that even as good as it was there were still  missing pieces there were still detractors.  One lawyer  questioned the officer’s use of force because the suspect clearly  dropped an item (you really cannot make out what he drops in  the video) and reached for it. The lawyer did not feel the suspect presented a threat which justified the use of lethal  force. How in the world can Mr. Lawyer know that?

I know my eyes see things that a camera never can, especially in a split second. It is safe to say the officer was able to see the gun the suspect was reaching for. Now comes the fun part…… ”Well if the suspect was only reaching for the gun then why did the officer shoot?”

True, the suspect was reaching for a gun, so why didn’t the officer shoot the gun out of his hand Lone Ranger style? Or engage the suspect in witty banter like Dirty Harry? Because that’s not real life….plain and simple there really is no other way to put it. Movies are for entertainment, they are not real. Real cops do not shoot at low percentage targets like hands and guns; they shoot to end the fight. I guarantee Wyatt Earp never shot a gun out of someone’s hand, it makes no sense. It does, however, make for good entertainment.

NFL quarterbacks often make “split second” decisions; race car drivers make “split second” and cops make split second decisions. So what goes into that split second, I mean in this video the officer already had his gun pointed at the “unarmed” suspect why shoot? I have recently had the opportunity to participate in several classes dealing with these types of reaction times. In one drill two officers stood side by side, one gun up and on target, the other gun in hand at his side. The officer on target shoots as soon as he senses movement from the other. I watched this four times and each time it was at best a tie, usually the officer with the gun at his side won.

How is that possible? There is actually a lot of science involved and it has to do with reaction time, the time it takes the officer to perceive the movement as a threat vs. the amount of time it takes the bad guy to move. Remember, the bad guy will have the edge; he is the only one who knows for sure if and when he is going to shoot. The officer will need to sense the movement, interpret that movement and react to the movement. If the officer waits, he will lose almost every single time.

I found some studies by Dr. Bill Lewinski of Minnesota State University at Mankato. Dr. Lewinski has made a name for himself studying reaction times. In his studies he has listed the time it takes a shooter to fire a round in various situations, for example a cross body draw seated in a car took .15 seconds or 15/100ths of a second!! That is a split second.  It took a suspect 09/100th ‘s of a second or .9 seconds to pull a gun from his waist band and fire from waist level and nearly the same to draw and fire with an outstretched arm. If the suspect already had the gun at his side in his hand, it took .38 seconds for him to fire. So, how fast could you react?

The study found the average officer, on target, could perceive the movement and fire in the area of 0.40 seconds or just a split second “slower” than the suspect could get off a round. On a plus side, the officer’s tendency was to be more accurate, but that is not the statistical tie I want to be on the wrong side of. Try it yourself, grab a couple of airsoft guns and see how you do….but those pellets do sting a little. On the other side the folks over at cop block call the study “Snake Oil” and think that Dr. Lewinski is a puppet for law enforcement, but based on my own training and experience I would say he is dead on and the cop block folks should either try it or go smoke another bowl.

What’s the point? In the end I just wanted us to all remember there is always a lot more going on in these videos than we realize. I don’t mean to sound like I’m against the body cameras, I have said many times before I have no issue with them. In the case I cited here I think it will go a long way to make life easier for the officer, it’s a shame we are at the point where that’s even necessary but here we are. The videos are going to be at best another glimpse into what was happening but they will never be able to give the viewer the emotion, the sounds, the smells and the overall vision of what it was like to be there. Watch the videos, learn comment, but remember it all happened in a split second.
